On Saturday, April 26, 2025, over 200,000 people gathered in the heart of Rome to bid a final farewell to Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, in the Vatican.

The Ceremony and Farewell
The funeral began at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square and concluded at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where he was laid to rest. In accordance with his wishes, the ceremony was conducted in a humble and simple manner. Unlike traditional papal funerals, Francis requested that his remains be buried modestly. The event was attended by the poor and homeless as well—those he served and championed throughout his life. The final stage of the burial was not public, and his name was inscribed in Latin—*Franciscus*—at his final resting place.
World Leaders in Mourning
Delegations from more than 160 countries attended the funeral, with world leaders present to pay their respects. Powerful moments of unity were captured as global figures shook hands in the name of peace. The ceremony was not only religious in nature but also held political and diplomatic significance. Pope Francis was a spiritual leader whose legacy was built on values of love, solidarity, and peace.
Legacy and Remembrance
Pope Francis’ life was marked by his commitment to gospel values and advocacy for the poor. He led by example, not only through words but through action. His legacy will live on in the Catholic Church and beyond, as his teachings and deeds are forever etched into history.
Following the funeral, world leaders and faithful around the globe paid tribute to the pope, who walked a lifelong path of love and service.
