„Murder, comedy, romance and intrigue” – that’s how the introduction describes Death By Chocolate, an English language theatre performance by DramaWorks company. And frankly, that’s all I need for an exciting evening.
Drama builds self-confidence, stretches the imagination and improves language skills – even more so if you have to perform in a language other than your mother tongue. DramaWorks is an English Theatre School in Budapest specializing in theatre education and training. It offers classes – all taught in English – in Acting and Music Theatre for students of different ages. Death By Chocolate will be performed by the company’s adult students on 11 June. The location is Tolnay Klári Stage (Tolnay Klári Színpad) in Aranytíz Community Centre (Aranytíz Kultúrház), an eclectic building restored in 2002-2003 that has become a significant cultural venue in the capital city.

The play was written by Craig Sodaro, a Chicago-born playwright some of whose works have been produced around the world and performed in cities like New York and Los Angeles. The performance in Budapest is directed by Peter Schueller, Drama and Music Theatre teacher at DramaWorks, member of the American Guild of Musical Artists and the Mu Phi Epsilon Musical Fraternity. He performs regularly in musical theater with companies such as 3D Theatricals, the Norris Theater, and Downey Civic Light Opera, among others.

As in most decent crime stories, the protagonist in Death By Chocolate is a private detective. Things however are not looking good for him; Nick Noir has fallen on hard times due to a botched case. Just when feeling the situation couldn’t get any worse, he gets a call from Coco Purvis, who, together with her sister Bonbon, runs a café. They contact Nick to solve the mysterious death of Vinnie the Leech while drinking the signature drink of Precious Perks Coffee Shop, Death By Chocolate. Of course, all suspects have a motive and opportunity, but luckily enough, Nick is assisted by Selma, his loyal and trusty secretary. The road to the solution is paved with plenty of false deductions, but they are all insignificant compared to the surprising conclusion Nick draws in the end.
