ESCAPE FROM THE CITY

Endless green meadows, peace, quiet and an incredible flora and fauna - for these, a record number of 1.4 million people visited Hungary’s national parks in 2014. Springtime and sunshine are coming, it’s time to escape from the city – we’ve collected the best national parks of the country.

Bükk National Park

The number of visitors at the national parks of Hungary grew from 2013 to 2014 and the largest increase, 25%, was registered in the Bükk National Park, in the North-Eastern part of Hungary, in Bükk Mountains. Hungary’s largest national park, founded in 1976, has a forested and has a wonderful mountanious landscape on 431 km². The Bükk Hills sustain a rich plant and animal kingdom, including numerous species that can only be found in this area, some in danger of extinction. This national park features Hungary’s most extensive network of forest cycle paths and the deepest cave in the country, István-lápa as well.

Balaton Uplands National Park

There’s a secluded, quieter and greener side of life near Lake Balaton; Balaton Uplands National Park occupies the Northern shoreland of the lake and was established by connecting the protected areas which had been separate before. Kis-Balaton („Small Balaton”) is part of the park, too; this huge wetland habitat is unique in the whole of Europe and is among the "Wetlands of International Importance as Waterfowl Habitat". Visit Balaton Uplands, pet tame buffalo and enjoy bird watching at Kis-Balaton, walk in lavender meadows on the Tihany Peninsula and climb extinct volcanoes in the Tapolca Basin.

Aggtelek National Park

The Aggtelek National Park is located in Northern Hungary in a karst region full of unique natural and cultural assets. It is the first Hungarian national park to be dedicated to the protection of abiotic values, superficial land formations and caves. The famous and beautiful caves of the Aggtelek Karst and the Slovak Karst were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. One of the biggest treasures of the area is the Baradla Cave, the largest and the most magnificent cave in the country and the biggest stalactite cave of the continent, with incredible formations.

Danube-Drava National Park

This must-see national park extends south to the point at which the two rivers merge before they leave Hungary. You can enjoy the wooded floodplains on the right side of River Danube, the narrow gauge railway at Gemenc or the Danube backwater at Nyék. You can also visit Mohács, the site of Hungary’s crushing defeat at the hands of the Turks in 1526. Along the left shore of River Drava, the Barcs juniper plantation, the green pastures of Drávaszentes meadow and Babócsa await visitors. The flora and fauna of the territory is unique as well; European beaver, protected osprey and black storks can be found in the park, among many others.
