„Green Cabs” in Budapest
Posted by Eszter Hermann · Mar 25, 2014

Hop into a taxi and protect the environment! – this could just as well be the slogen of Budapest Taxi, having introduced an environmentally friendly vehicle fleet.

After the world’s biggest cities like Hong-Kong, London, Hamburg, New York or Lisbon, Budapest can now also take pride in having „green cabs” transporting the lucky passengers. The fleet of Budapest Taxi has been expanded by 2 electric Nissan Leaf models and 50 Opel Zafira compressed natural gas vehicles, so called CNG cars.

Being able to decrease air pollution is priceless – thanks to the vehicles, carbon monoxide emission could be reduced by 7 tonnes per year –, while it is also noteworthy to mention that they lower the expenses of drivers: for the new cars it costs third as much to cover 1 kilometer as for the old, gasoline-powered ones. According to predictions, the electric cars will have paid for themselves in 4-5 years.

The debuting Nissan Leaf models are powered by high-performance lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. They don’t only offer longer lifetimes and are inherently safer but they are much quieter and take only 25 minutes to recharge which is enough to cover the next nearly 200 kilometers. The limited number of charging stations is still a drawback, but when this problem is solved, environmentally sound vehicles might be introduced in public transport, too – who knows what the future holds?

For now, passengers, when hailing a cab, can demand to travel by one of the eco-friendly vehicles of the company – not only for a quieter ride, but for the feeling of having contributed to a cleaner Budapest.
