An English couple and the Hungarian countryside

They quit their boring middleclass life and became TV stars in a small Hungarian village.

It has been a tendency for several decades that people leave their villages and farms and move to the big city. But not this English couple! Julia Pryke and Gareth Shone took a deep breath, quit their „boring” life in the UK and moved to Hungary. They chose a small village in Somogy County, which was quite different from their previous life. In Berkshire Julia worked as a hairdresser and Garreth as a cobbler, but wanted something else. They searched the internet for a home they could afford with £5,000 and found this rundown house in Gadács which had been empty for five years. They bought it for £3,000 and still have £2,000 to spend on repairs.

Although they don’t speak a world in Hungarian, and their family tried to dehorn them, they moved to this ruined house. Here, the standard of living is not as high as you normally see (and then we said nothing): They only have an outdoor shower, use solar panels for heating and the toilet is a compostable with an additional urinal made from a fermenting bin. When they first arrived, they had to cook by lighting their own fire, but now they have a wood-burning stove they bought for £70.

Gareth admitted: when they first saw their new home, he got a panic attack and thought it was a huge mistake. But now the couple plans to literally live on zero budget: although now they spend £6 a day, basically for food, but from next year they’ll grow their own vegetables and keep their own chickens and rabbits on their 18sq ft plot of land. It might seem strange, but Julia explained:

'I suppose in England we had a normal, boring life. The excitement was missing. We had to have the jobs to pay the bills and you had to pay the bills as that's what you were told to do. But I have found the less you have, the better off you are, as you can focus on who you are and what you want from life,' she said.

They showed their new lifestyle on Channel 5 in “New Lives In The Wild”. Worth seeing!
